Michael Sutton is a London-based jazz vocalist whose work is defined by lyrical storytelling, understated interpretation and a warm, contemporary approach. His performances place the emotional character of a song at the centre, with a style that is intimate, conversational and deeply connected to the meaning of the lyric.

His debut album, Those Leftover Dreams, was produced by acclaimed vocalist Claire Martin OBE and brought together pianist and arranger Rob Barron, bassist Jeremy Brown, drummer Mark Taylor and trumpeter Quentin Collins. The album established Sutton as a distinctive new voice, combining carefully chosen repertoire with elegant arrangements and a strong sense of narrative. Rather than treating songs as museum pieces, Sutton approaches them as living material, looking for the emotional detail and contemporary relevance within each lyric.

Since its release, Sutton has performed at venues including the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, Cadogan Hall, The Pheasantry and Piano Smithfield, with performances ranging from intimate duo settings to full-band appearances. His music has also received national radio support from BBC Radio 3 and Jazz FM.

In 2025, Sutton released the EP And I Love Her, an intimate collaboration with pianist Paul Edis. Moving between jazz standards, overlooked songs and material from beyond the traditional jazz repertoire, the recording further developed his focus on simplicity, space and storytelling. The title track was selected as a Jazz FM Featured Track, while the EP later received airplay on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Record Requests.

Across his recordings and live work, Sutton is drawn to songs with emotional weight — pieces that can be reshaped through phrasing, dynamics and interpretation without losing their original character. His approach favours subtlety over excess, allowing the lyric and melody to do the work while creating space for musicians to respond and interact.

Alongside his work as a performer, Sutton is the founder of Taras Jazz Records, an independent label and record shop built around a belief in thoughtful curation, artist development and the continuing value of physical music. The label reflects many of the same ideas found in his own music: a respect for jazz tradition, an interest in contemporary voices and a focus on presenting music with care and context.
