Nubya Garcia — Odyssey
Why It Belongs in Your Collection
One of the joys of following contemporary jazz is hearing an artist widen the frame.
On Odyssey, Nubya Garcia takes the grounded, powerful tenor sound heard on SOURCE and places it inside a much larger musical landscape — orchestral writing, R&B, dub, broken beat and expansive contemporary jazz.
The ambition has grown, but Garcia’s sound remains the centre of gravity.
This is a particularly strong TJR choice because it connects the tradition of the tenor saxophone to what is happening in British jazz now, without pretending that those are two separate worlds.
The Sound and the Story
Garcia co-produced the record with Kwes and is joined again by Joe Armon-Jones on keys, Daniel Casimir on bass and Sam Jones on drums.
The orchestral writing gives the album scale, while guests including esperanza spalding and Georgia Anne Muldrow introduce contrasting vocal textures.
What could have become over-arranged remains spacious, rhythmic and recognisably Nubya.
