There are Christmas records and then there is A Charlie Brown Christmas.
Vince Guaraldi somehow created music that feels nostalgic even on the first listen. It is playful without being novelty, beautifully played without sounding showy. For me, that is exactly why it deserves a place in a jazz collection rather than simply being brought out as a seasonal record.
“Christmas Time Is Here”, “Skating” and the irrepressible “Linus and Lucy” have become part of the sound of Christmas.
Recorded for the 1965 television special A Charlie Brown Christmas, Guaraldi’s score gave Charles Schulz’s Peanuts world a musical identity that has lasted for generations.
The beauty is its understatement. Guaraldi can swing, turn reflective and find something genuinely moving in seemingly simple material without ever overplaying it. It is accessible enough to introduce somebody to jazz and good enough to keep seasoned listeners coming back every December.
